Clarification regarding voice recordings on Devonfield cameras

As you would be aware, security cameras have recently been installed throughout many of the Devonfield sites - for example, both the Spreyton and the Parker Street units now have security cameras outside.

The same goes for many of the Devonfield vehicles.

We have written several times to management to clarify whether the audio component of the cameras is disabled - both for those inside the vehicles and the outside security cameras, because whilst cameras can be used, the listening of conversations is in fact in breach of the Tasmanian Listening Devices Act.

We now have confirmation from your Operations Manager that she has informed Team Leaders to “let staff know that none of our cameras have voice recording turned on, this includes cars and properties.”

So, rest assured if lights come on outside on the security cameras or if Siri tells you to slow down in the vehicle it does not mean that the listening component is turned on.

HACSU would however hold Devonfield accountable if an instance arose that they tried to use voice recorded evidence as part of a disciplinary case against a worker.

Thanks to members who have raised these concerns. If you have any questions or have other work-related issues, please give HACSUassist a call on 1300 880 032 – we’re here to help!
