Public sector nurses bargaining update #6

Posted on 20 May, 2026

Nursing

Yesterday, we held our fifth bargaining meeting to progress a new nursing and midwifery agreement for HACSU members working in the public service. Here is the rundown!

Unions finally completed presenting their log of claims to the government. We touched on a range of important points, including critical incident leave for nurses so that you can recover appropriately from trauma experienced on shift, and making sure that your mandatory training is completed while you’re on the clock.

At the conclusion of the meeting, your bargaining team advised the government’s lead negotiator that our members want at least a preliminary response to our log of claims in next week’s bargaining meeting. Disappointingly, the lead negotiator indicated that they will not be in a position to do this next week.

As your delegates, Bianca and Diny said in our video update (which you can watch here), it is vital for you to remain engaged.

Here’s what this means right now:

Keeping up to date with the bargain through our email updates.
Attending any HACSU meetings in your area.
Putting your hand up to become a delegate if there’s not currently one in your workplace.
