Urgent action needed for ambulance fleet safety

Posted on 6 September, 2024

Ambulance

As you may be aware, a few months ago we wrote to Ambulance Tasmania raising some serious concerns about the maintenance and monitoring of the fleet of operational ambulances across the state.

The information we recently received about the state of the fleet is concerning.

Out of the 107 operational ambulances on the road, 9 have surpassed the 210,000km limit set by AT for vehicle replacement. We deem these vehicles now to be unsafe and have asked AT when they plan to pull them from service.

In addition, 16 more vehicles are close to reaching the 210,000km limit, and 23% of the fleet will need to be replaced within the next 6 months.

This isn’t a problem we can afford to kick down the road. We’ve called on AT to respond by the end of next week with their plan to fix this massive issue. The Government must ensure AT has appropriate authority and funds to get new trucks on the road urgently.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as your Union Executive reviews AT’s response. Stay tuned for more info soon.
