We met with UAW Head Office yesterday to get to the bottom of what’s happening with your paid meal breaks.
We told them the proposal as it stands wasn’t acceptable – with some staff losing up to 3%of their pay, or being forced to work more time for the same pay.
Moreover, it isn’t just the proposal to remove the break that’s problematic, but also UAW wanting to reduce your contracted hours and leave/super accruals as a result. This will make already low-paid workers even worse off.
UAW refused to put this change on ice and deal with it at negotiations for your new agreement. This is disappointing, but we still don’t accept that they have complete discretion to make this change.
We’ve told them they need to change the proposal so that it preserves your entitlements, not cuts them out.
They’ve made a commitment to come back to us soon with what we hope is a revised proposal.
In the meantime don’t sign anything you aren’t comfortable with and, in particular, don’t sign away your contracted hours – once they go you don’t generally get them back.
