We urgently wrote to UAW management today to raise serious concerns about the unlawful locker audits that have happened at the Village.
Almost immediately we received an apology from UAW and their commitment that locker searches will not occur again, we told them that it's employees who should be apologised to.
Your employer does not have an unfettered right to conduct searches in your workplace. Even if an employer suspects an employee has stolen goods or property or stashed goods in their locker, they cannot just search employees or their personal belongings. What UAW did was an outrageous breach of trust, but it’s not surprising with all the events occurring at UAW over the last few months.
We can only imagine what you must have felt once you found out that someone had gone through your private possessions without your knowledge.
HACSU will always stand up for workers’ rights and be counted. If you know some colleagues who aren't yet HACSU members, tell them to join as a strong united workforce is the only way to stand up to this type of unlawful act.
