Backpay is underway

After several workers in the north west let us know they’ve worked 9-hour sleepover shifts, we’ve written to St Michaels telling them this is not allowed under your agreement, which specifies sleepovers are eight-hour shifts.

Your CEO, Mike Thomas, has replied and said they’ll backpay affected current and former staff by COB on 20 April. Here’s Mike’s response and the time frames of the investigation:

"I wish to confirm that St Michael’s has commenced an investigation into the matter and wish to advise the following timeframes:

  1. By close of business on 1 April 2022 the completion of a review of all employee timesheets and wages to determine any instances of sleepover underpayment.
  2. By close of business on 8 April 2022 the calculation of any applicable back pay due to staff associated with any identified instances of sleepover underpayment.
  3. By close of business on 20 April 2022 the payment of applicable back pay due to those staff for any identified instances of sleepover underpayment.

Our investigation and any applicable payment of back pay will include both current and former employees.

I would like to reiterate that St Michael’s appreciates the seriousness of this matter."

We’ll keep an eye on the issue and make sure St Michaels sticks to their timeframes for back paying the money owed to workers.

Congratulations to those who raised the sleepover issue. You’ve now ensured any worker who worked 9-hour sleepovers at St Michaels will be back paid accordingly– this is the power of being a union member!
