We’ve asked the boss to adopt paid pandemic leave

We welcomed the announcement that several awards will be updated to include paid pandemic leave for 3 months as we'd told Fair Work this leave is essential for all aged care workers, and the situation in Victoria has made the need for this change crystal clear.

On July 26 we wrote to all major aged care employers in the state calling on them to adopt the changes and put in place paid pandemic leave for the duration of the pandemic.

As most aged care workers in the state are covered by enterprise agreements, the changes to the award won’t automatically flow on to them, but we want to make sure all aged care workers have access to this vital paid leave so have asked employers to confirm they will come to the table and adopt the changes by the end of the week.

We were pleased to hear that after receiving our letter the state’s biggest aged care employer, Southern Cross Care, committed on ABC Radio to roll-out the entitlement for all workers - while SCC are making big roster changes at a number of facilities that we're currently disputing, this at least is a step in the right direction.

We'll keep members in the loop as we continue to negotiate.
