Some HACSU members received an outrageous text message yesterday from SCC management that you might’ve heard about. The message was sent to workers who’ve taken sick leave or didn’t work a shift, threatening them with illegal roster changes and stripping some workers of their weekend shifts.
This is a new low, even for Southern Cross Care.
Workplace laws are clear – employers can’t threaten to change your hours if you use a workplace right like taking sick leave.
The days of the week you work and your starting and finishing times each day cannot be changed without your agreement first – regardless of your attendance on a shift.
We’ve sent a letter to SCC telling them that they need to issue an immediate retraction of their unlawful message. If they fail to do so HACSU are well within our rights to take them to court for breaking the law, where they can be fined close to $100,000 for this breach.
Thanks to all of you who got in touch with us and brought this disgusting behaviour to our attention. When it comes to cowboys like SCC it pays to be vigilant and speak up – because you don’t deserve to feel threatened at work.
If you’re worried about being disadvantaged for taking legitimate sick leave, or if you’ve got any questions about your entitlements, please make sure you get in touch with us via HACSUassist – we’re here to help!
