Cuts to servery hours at four sites.

We met with Southern Cross Care management earlier this week and serious concerns about their intention to cut hours in the servery at Fairway Rise, Rosary Gardens, GYG and Sandown.

SCC claimed that the changes they want to implement have come about because residents had requested a “better dining experience”. We argued that a better dining experience should not involve cuts to hours, and we believe that it would be a worse dining experience if there are fewer staff. This fell on deaf ears.

SCC wouldn’t give up reducing workers’ hours and said that they would look at redundancies and redeployment at those four facilities.

They also said that they will set up focus groups this week at each affected facility and want two catering staff members and two ECAs to be involved in the focus groups.

Remember, your roster can only be changed if you agree to the changes. Your agreement says clearly, “as a part time employee, the employee and employer will agree in writing on a regular pattern of work including the number of hours to be worked each week, the days of the week the employee will work and the start finishing times each day”.

If you don’t agree, don’t sign a new contract, and contact us.

We’ll update you once they get back to us next week as to where things are at. If you need any more information in the meantime, please contact HACSUassist on 1300 880 032 or assist@hacsu.org.au
