Late last week we contacted Respect to give them an update on members' position on the proposed new agreement and, importantly, the change to meal breaks.
Staff feedback indicated the impact of the change - having to work 5 hours instead of 4 for a meal break but getting extra 10-minute tea breaks - depended on facility and shift. For many people it didn’t make much of a difference, but for some it could be a real problem.
So we’ve proposed a way forward. Firstly, we need a draft copy of the agreement for members to be able to read through. We’ve also asked for detail of all the shifts that could be negatively impacted by the change in meal breaks.
Once we’ve got all this, we’ve asked for another bargaining meeting so we can work through practically what the change would mean for workers across the state.
We’ll keep members in the loop.
