Recently we were advised of the plan to install new vinyl throughout the kitchen and cafeteria areas to remedy faults in the flooring that are having an adverse effect on the hygiene of the area.
Last week we met with THS management to discuss the re-flooring and the impact on current staff working conditions and how the overall operational requirements of the kitchen and 'meals on wheels' services will be managed.
While there's no date set in stone for the commencement of the work, and there are still some finer details yet to be finalised, we do have a rough outline of how they propose to maintain services while the kitchen isn’t operational.
THS is planning on works being completed in a 3-5 week period and will be requesting that staff work from the Mersey kitchen for the duration. The intention is to cook at MCH, transport meals to refrigerated containers at NWRH and heat them up in the NWPH kitchen where THS has negotiated use of their kitchen - staff meals will be distributed from the kiosk until the cafeteria section is completed.
We raised concerns over the additional costs associated with working at the Mersey such as travel times and costs along with highlighting the need for possible re-deployment options as some staff may not be able to go to MCH. We haven’t received any confirmation of how they plan to address these concerns as yet but we will be requesting this before anybody starts the temporary change in working arrangements. We’ve gone through this all at the LGH so we need to make sure THS learns from that experience when rolling out the changes at NWRH.
During rounds today we learned of a meeting to be held with management tomorrow to go over their proposals, in which we'll now be attending, and we'll drop by the kitchen again this week to update members and get feedback.
