Meercroft workload taking its toll

Pressure on workers needs easing.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve touched base with Wendy several times to advise her that the current workload and short staffing issues are beginning to take their toll on staff at Meercroft. We let her know morale has been low due to the ever-increasing workload, with not enough staff to cover shifts leaving some staff doing an unhealthy number of hours per fortnight to make up for the shortfall.

Wendy acknowledges there has been a struggle to cover shifts, particularly when the facility was in lockdown, and that several staff did work many extra hours to assist with care during this time for which Meercroft is extremely grateful.

She said they’ve been employing new care staff, nurses, catering and cleaning staff each month and that more will commence work at Meercroft in two weeks’ time but acknowledges the process has been slow while new employees wait for their working with vulnerable people cards.

We also advised Wendy it had been reported that Munnew had become a toxic working environment and not a nice place to work. She said Meercroft had employed someone to investigate what’s going on and they had prepared a report which they were going to discuss to determine the issues and what plan is needed to ensure it becomes a better workplace.

Hopefully some of Wendy’s plans and the addition of new staff will help ease the workload and short staffing issues but, in the meantime, we’ll keep raising these concerns until something changes to ease the pressure on workers.
