WH&S meetings back on the agenda.

On recent visits concerns were raised about the lack of Workplace Health & Safety meetings being held in the north west, in fact it’s been 12 months since the last one, which is worrying given the COVID-19 situation and the extra health and safety measures now part of our lives.

We immediately raised this with THS senior management, outlining their obligations under the Work Health & Safety Act, and were given an undertaking that WH&S committee meetings will be re-established and commence soon.

As a result, the first WH&S meeting since August last year was held last week, and was mainly used to establish the meeting structures, terms of reference and timetable of meetings to ensure all legal requirements are met.

It was also agreed that WH&S and HSR meetings will be combined to help reach the required quorums, and it appears the only requirement not yet met is the appointment of a chairperson for future meetings – so if you feel you could do this, please put your name forward.

As it was the first WH&S meeting in a long time it was understandable that a number of HSRs weren’t present, so if you’re an HSR who wasn’t told about the meeting please let me know so we can make sure you’re involved in future meetings.

To ensure WH&S is prioritised by THS we must have a good HSR presence at meetings - HSRs are the voice of the workers on the committee after all.
