We won the battle, but the fight isn't over.

After escalating our disagreement with the DEM Director over support staff levels to a dispute a fortnight ago we've had a win.

THS agreed to keep Support Officers at 3 per shift across all shifts, but this agreement is only for a 3-month trial period, so during that time all Support Officers need to continue to gather evidence to support their claim, this time also showing the positive impact of having 3 per shift. SRLSs also need to be completed especially around weapons searches and any inappropriate or dangerous tasks asked of you - the more evidence, the stronger the case.

If any changes are made to the Support Officer roster in the next 3 months you need to report it to us immediately and we would again recommend that all Support Officers, including casuals and especially those who still have to finalise joining, join up with HACSU in preparation for further difficulties down the track. If we end in a big fight, we will need all hands-on deck.

THS has also agreed to roster an extra Hospital Aide on the early shift for both Tuesday and Wednesday to help cover the extra workload caused by ordering and receipt of stock. This falls short of what we asked for after its decision to end your night shift. But part of this outcome revolves around Lorinda’s direction that cleaning staff would now return to DEM and re-commence pre-COVID cleaning duties - walls, floors, curtains -thus lessening the workload for Hospital Aides.

If you are still asked to do these tasks you need to remind the ANUMs they need to follow the DON’s directive and get the extra support. Lorinda made it clear this is the ANUM’s job. If any of your colleague’s aren’t yet members now is an important time to get involved as we work through these issues.
