Eskleigh staff agreement

Following information sessions at Eskleigh there's been a bit of discussion about what the proposed agreement means for members, with voting delayed so a few issues can be ironed out, so we thought we'd go through some of the main changes. Here are some of the big-ticket items:

  • Wage increase of 2.5% or the Fair Work awarded wage rise (whichever is bigger)
  • Addressing some of the unfair impacts of rosters on overtime, with all time worked in excess of rostered hours to be paid as overtime unless a worker has agreed to alter their pattern of work
  • Compassionate leave extended to include those who an employee can demonstrate they have a ‘significant relationship’ with
  • A right to request conversion from casual to permanent part-time

The proposed expiry of the new agreement is 31 July 2021, and after bargaining through two CEOs and COVID we wanted a longer agreement but Eskleigh haven’t come at that. If the proposal is successful it would lock in the above gains.

Recently two other clauses have been discussed after info sessions – sleepovers and meal breaks. Following feedback, the sleepover clause is going to be updated so the hours reflect the real shift timing. The agreement talks about unpaid meal breaks, but staff have received paid breaks for many years - after all, they can’t leave the main facility. Back in the 2005 agreement paid meal breaks were spelled out and we recently asked for the proposal to be updated to include these old words, but Eskleigh said while they didn’t want to insert the words from 2005 they ‘have no intention to change the arrangements which are currently in place’.
