Mandatory training for disability support workers

We’ve had a lot of questions about mandatory training and whether staff can be required to complete it in their own time, unpaid.

The answer is no!

Staff should be paid for completing work-related mandatory training. That means it should be scheduled during normal rostered shifts or, if the employer allows and agrees to it, be paid overtime to complete it at the end of a shift.

Some examples of mandatory training are:

  • Human rights training
  • Manual handling training
  • NDIS regulatory training

A strongly unionised workplace offers the best protection and gives workers more of a voice on their working conditions. HACSU membership also includes free Professional Indemnity Malpractice Insurance along with a whole host of other member benefits.
