Documentation is the key.

We’ve gotten word of a few incidents that have arisen because of a participant’s behaviour, but when we raise the issues with management we get told that it’s the first they’ve heard of it as nothing has been documented.

With that in mind, we can’t stress enough how important it is to be sure to document any behavioural issues or important things that come up in the workplace, and it’s also important for members to document any strategies they use, as well as noting when the strategies don’t work - if it isn’t documented then as far as the employer is concerned it didn’t happen.

If changes are needed to present to NDIS then everything must be documented properly, so document, document, document – even if it feels as though it may not be all that important - because sometimes a small thing takes a while to manifest into a major thing and the paper trail will come in useful down the track.
