We’ve written to your facility manager today asking for answers to several issues at Sandhill. We told Peter that HACSU’s assist line has been inundated with workers contacting us about a range of concerns including short staffing, which was the major issue raised at today’s site visit.
Workers we've spoken to say they work short nearly every shift with today being no exception, and say they are continually asked to do extra shifts and some staff even do double shifts on a regular basis. Another issue is the expectation for workers to turn up early to get their rapid antigen test done, do handover and be on the floor to begin their shift at the start time.
This is totally unacceptable. If Calvary wants workers to perform duties before the start of their shift, RAT included, they need to be paying staff accordingly – anything else is in fact wage theft.
Workers also say the new trial of care staff running one tray at a time down to residents’ rooms is time consuming and adding stress and workload to their already overworked schedule. Sandhill workers are at their wits end and management need to get back to us asap with what they intend to do to rectify this current situation.
