When informal turns to formal

Sometimes you get asked to attend a meeting with your manager or employer, and this can often seem like a casual request, but then you get there and find out other senior people are sitting in and that informal meeting suddenly looks rather formal and you feel a little trapped… but you do have options.

If you feel this might be an ambush, ask for it to be postponed and request an agenda for what will be discussed at the meeting.

You can continue with the meeting if you feel comfortable, but if at any stage it deteriorates you can call a halt and ask for an adjournment.

You have the right to union representation if the meeting is about your performance or conduct or is about a workplace change, so call your union and ask for help.
